Tübingen Inventory to Measure Value-Orientation in the Teaching Profession (TIVO)

Research on the professional ethos of teachers focuses on different perspectives (virtue, care, codes of conduct, etc.) and among these one perspective focuses on the importance of values and value-orientations in the teaching profession. Both national (German) and international literature contains numerous value-orientations—mostly derived from a heuristic approach—that are considered important for the professional actions of teachers. Besides instruments like the 'Rokeach Value Survey' or the 'Portrait Value Questionnaire', that record generally relevant value-orientations in societies, there is no individual instrument for the empirical recording of specific value-orientations in the teaching profession so far. With the development of the 'Tübingen Inventory to Measure Value-Orientation in the Teaching Profession' (TIVO), an instrument is being developed that records specific value orientations in the teaching profession within the framework of standardised surveys for the first time. In addition, studies in the United States of America, India and China are aimed at further construct validation in an international context. After successful development and testing in the field, the instrument will be able to generate new insights within the discourse of values in research on the professional ethos of teachers.
