Democracy in schools and teacher education (Demo)

Democracies are currently being challenged to a great extent by national and global crises. Schools as institutions and teachers as professionals are considered to play an important role in maintaining and strengthening democratic social structures and in supporting the educational processes of students as citizens. Although the question of democracy has been dealt with continuously in educational science, there is a lack of a systematic synopsis of the discourses on "democracy" in schools and teacher education, which are differentiated under various terms. This project addresses this desideratum by systematically analyzing the scientific literature on "democracy" in these contexts using the method Conceptual Systematic Review (CSR) and delineating variants of the term use: For example, what is understood by democracy education or learning democracy? Are such terms used synonymously or do they describe specific discourses? As a result, the systematization of the academic literature on the subject should contribute to a sharpening of academic talk about 'democracy' . A starting point for an intensified discussion of the subject matter in teacher education is being created and the public discourse about democracy in schools can be inspired by scholarly communication. The doctoral researcher in this project is Christian Gräbner.

In teaching, the working group is responsible for the basic foundations in the field of education, educational psychology and sociology of education in the teacher education programs.
